EKHLA Update on COVID-19

Dear EKHLA Families,

As promised, we have been closely monitoring developments regarding COVID-19 and have been keeping up with state and local decisions being made to help slow the spread of this virus. Based on the San Antonio mayor's declaration of a public health emergency and a prohibition of gatherings of 500 or more people, EKHLA, like other area school districts, will be closed March 16-20, 2020. All school events, extra curricular activities and practices will also be cancelled.

We understand this decision poses a hardship and inconvenience for many families; however, we are hoping this will help slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our students, staff and families healthy. We understand that proactive measures are superior to reactive measures in terms of controlling the number of new cases.

The coronavirus is thought to be spread via person-to-person contact through contaminated air droplets from coughing and sneezing by an infected person. As with controlling the spread of other viruses, we urge you to speak to your child about the following prevention measures:

  • Wash your hands regularly, especially after using the restroom and before preparing or consuming food. Using soap and hot water, wash for about 20 seconds. Be sure to also wash your fingertips.

  • Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands or in the air. Always try to cough or sneeze into a tissue, and then throw the tissue away. If you don’t have a tissue, cough/sneeze into your arm.

  • As much as you can, avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose.

  • As a reminder if you have traveled during spring break, follow the CDC guidelines regarding the need for health monitoring and possible self-quarantine.

EKHLA administration and staff will be finalizing logistics on distance learning options for students. We will also be working with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for guidance on how school days will be made up for the school year.  We will keep you informed of decisions about the weeks to follow via email, our website, and our Facebook page. We will continue to follow the guidance of city, state, and national authorities to help with these decisions.
